Carolina Style Mustard BBQ Sauce

Unlike the tomato-based sauces of Tennessee and Georgia, or even the white sauces of northern Alabama, the mustard based BBQ sauce of the Carolina’s is an entirely different animal. A bit spicy and sweet, with plenty of big flavors – this is a rather healthy and delicious sauce to slather on fresh, hot off the grill pork chops.


  • 1 cup prepared yellow mustard
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Hot sauce, to taste


  1. Combine all ingredients into a medium sized stockpot over medium heat on the stovetop.
  2. Bring mixture to a slow simmer, stirring on occasion, until evenly combined and just reduced, about 10 minutes. Serve.
